Microsoft and Netscape Are Still Dominating Browser War, but Opera is Slowly Increasing it's Overall Market Share |
Opera Browser Accounts for Less Than 1% of the Global Market, But Has a Significantly Higher Usage Share In Some European Countries.
(SAN DIEGO, CA - Dec. 4, 2001) WebSideStory, Inc. (www.websidestory.com), the world's leading provider of outsourced e-business intelligence services, today reported that despite Microsoft and Netscape domination of the browser market, Opera is slowly increasing its overall market share, most noticeably in some European countries.
Opera's global usage share as of November 29, 2001, was 0.67 percent, according to WebSideStory's StatMarket (www.statmarket.com), a Web site optimization service and the leading source for data on global Internet user trends. Although still far behind Microsoft and Netscape, Opera's global usage share has more than doubled since January 2001, when it was less than 0.3 percent. Usage share is the percentage of Internet surfers that are using a particular browser.
Opera usage share has been growing at a faster rate in certain European countries since January 2001. For instance, its usage share in Russia as of November 29, 2001 was 5.88 percent, up from about 1.5 percent at the beginning of the year, StatMarket reported. And in Germany and Sweden, Opera was at 3.37 percent and 1.8 percent respectively, having grown from a 1.3 percent and .5 percent usage share in January 2001.
"Opera launched version 5 a year ago, which was a free ad-sponsored browser," said Geoff Johnston, vice president of product marketing for StatMarket. "This was a smart move, as it seems to have increased their user base. They are proving, slowly but surely, that they can still be a player in the browser war. This should keep Netscape and Microsoft on their toes."
StatMarket (www.statmarket.com) publishes information gathered from more than 80 million Internet users a day to more than 125,000 sites worldwide using WebSideStory's HitBox® Enterprise (www.hitboxenterprise.com) and other HitBox e-business intelligence services. The service segments information from visitors in 245 countries, and 120 industry categories.
